Syosset High School, located in snobby, hellish
Syosset, New York, just got an ISDN line. Unfortunately, they've censored all
the web sites hosted by GNN members. Asked why this had been done, principal
Dr. Jorge Schneider assumed that the site had been blocked because illegal
activity had been occurring on GNN's web site. Dr. Schneider is evidently
oblivious to the fact that GNN is a subsidiary of Puritan on-line service
America On-Line.
The Iron Fist
At the heart of this censorship is Mr. Wieland, the FOLT who provided the
inspiration for another web page of mine. He rules
over the computers with an iron fist of ignorance. Mr. Wieland tries to
cover up his own lack of knowledge by threatening to suspend or eject all
kids who know more than he. Constantly watching over the six terminals, this totalitarian powerseeker attempts to control the interests of students. He constantly yells at kids who use any sites besides
those linked to the school's web site (a site which, by the way, isn't very comprehensive at all).
Enforcement
"Hey! No fooling around with the computers! [bangs on desk]
" Mr. Wieland tries to simultaneously discourage fun
and make his way around the library, yelling at kids who do anything that he hasn't
read about. "Hey! No fun stuff! No games! Just work, work, work!
" "You! You look like you know something! Get out of
the library!" "You want freedom? You want rights? Go home. This
is a school!"
Fighting back
I'm not letting this blatant violation of my rights continue to effect me
or my schoolmates. I plan to bring this matter to the attention of the
principal, librarians, and board of education. If they can't figure it out
still, then it's time to go up to a higher level. I've actually contacted the
American Civil Liberties Union about this, and
hopefully, if the administration can't do anything about it, the ACLU can.
